Cellular companies (T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T) have announced their plans to sunset (retire) their CDMA and 3G technology. 

Beginning early 2022, if you have a fire or burglar alarm being supported by a CDMA or 3G cellular signals, the moment your cellular provider replaces the equipment at your local tower, your system will no longer be able to communicate trouble or alarm signals – leaving your system in a state of failure.

1) Is the 3G and CDMA Sunset real?

Although much of the information on the internet is directed at cell phone customers,  explaining the release of 5G technology for their personal cellular devices, the facts remain the same.  Alarm communicators that rely on the 3G signals will be impacted just like 3G cell phones. 

2) Can I wait until 2022 to replace my alarm’s cellular communicator?

Cellular providers have already begun replacing 3G equipment that has failed or is failing with newer LTE and 5G equipment.  There is no guarantee that 3G and CDMA supported communicators will continue to operate in your area up until the date in 2022 the cellular companies announced.

Furthermore, the construction industry including the alarm industry, is experiencing various impacts from the Pandemic.  With the foreseeable supply and delivery delays continuing for the near future along with the thousands of customers across the country also needing similar equipment upgrades, those that choose to wait may be impacted with longer wait times for their cellular communicator to be installed.

3) How much will a replacement cellular communicator cost?
